The Types of Fish in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is widely recognized for having one of the best sport fisheries in the world. It is such a popular destination because throughout the year there are numerous game fish in the waters off the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Costa Rica, as well as in the many lakes and rivers throughout the small Central American country. Let’s take a look at some of the many types of fish in the area.

Dorado: These fish are abundant on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Costa Rica. They can be found throughout the year, but are most abundant between October and March.

Marlin: Black and blue marlin abound in coastal waters throughout the year. However, their numbers tend to peak between October and December. The Blue Marlin also increased in number from approximately April through June.

Yellowfin Tuna – This species is a popular target for sport fishermen visiting Costa Rica due to its abundance along the Pacific coast throughout the year.

Rainbow Bass – Although not overly generous in number, Rainbow Bass makes its home in some of the inland lakes and rivers in the area. They can be found more frequently at any time of the year in Lake Arenal and CaƱo Negro.
