The ceramic tiles and the bathrooms for this new beginning

Last September was certainly a month of restarts, in fact, in addition to the Super Salone, a new edition of Cersaie was inaugurated in Bologna, the exhibition of ceramic coverings and bathrooms par excellence.

A real tribute to materials and new trends in terms of interiors and constructions.

The way of understanding and conceiving materials for our home is interesting, and not at all obvious: the common concept of ceramic covering, which inhabits the bathroom, and at most the kitchen, is considerably distorted, invading the domestic space at 360 °.

There is no longer a distinction between materials, but rather an organic and plastic idea of space and surfaces.

Why not imagine a beautiful ceramic wall in the living room too?

The desired image is to cover all the rooms of the house, suggesting an uncommon use of materials.

But what are the areas to refer to?

There are two trends in terms of use and choice of materials: the small, precious, often colored, glossy format, and the “extended” format that of large slabs, without joints, immense surfaces that cover the walls.

The small format

In the first case, these are small formats, the rectangle becomes the protagonist of the shapes, horizontal or vertical, often beveled, sometimes it turns into a hexagon or pentagon.

The finishes range from opaque to glossy, and the surfaces become smooth, reflective, sometimes glazed, small precious tiles, produced in exotic and distant places.

The color joint is often enhanced by the shapes and composition of the tiles themselves.

The bright, saturated, and intense shades go back to the design of the 70s, that of the great masters of design, to pure and primary colors.

The effect? The walls become colored canvases, inlays, and embroideries, which adorn the spaces.

The extended format

In the second case, on the other hand, the effect we want to recreate is that of large surfaces, unique in a continuum between the parts, which invade the whole space.

Large slabs that enliven the walls with material and textile effects, the ceramic folds to the texture and organic motifs.

The natural effects, often landscaped, become building and cladding material.

The effect is that of the fabric, porous, soft, stitched, colored, which covers the surfaces like a silent mantle.

The ceramic coating comes out of the bathroom: it invades the house.

The idea of transporting the cladding outside the bathroom and kitchen is interesting, sometimes curious.

Ceramic, both in its smallest and largest format, becomes a precious covering for the domestic space.

The idea is to create backdrops, scenographies, on the wall, which dialogue with the design of less conventional environments, for this type of materials, such as living room, entrance, and distribution spaces.

The background becomes matter and the wall acquires plasticity.

What’s left of the bathrooms?

The bathroom, which shares the cladding materials with the rest of the house, is contaminated by colors, textures, and the idea of domesticity.

It is no longer just a place of service, where we can spend a small part of our time at home, but it becomes a real place for dialogue, for sharing, and why not for comfort.

The washbasins almost become sculptures, ceramic monoblocks, which impose themselves as real protagonists of the space; the taps are colored with precious colors and finishes, golds, bronzes, and toppings are the main threads, both for the bathroom fixtures and the showers.

The furniture and mirrors impose themselves as plastic volumes that escape from the flat surfaces of the walls and are modeled three-dimensional in space, suspended, never on the ground.

Light becomes the protagonist of the material and illuminates the actors of the scene in a selected and precious way.
